MAGUINDANAO – A powerful explosion late Tuesday damaged a power pylon in the town of Pagalungan in Maguindanao province in the restive Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said the troops from the 7th Infantry Battalion and municipal policemen were sent to the area to inspect and guard other pylons which is being operated by the privately-owned National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP). The blast damaged Tower 26 near Galakit village.
No individual claimed responsibility for the blast, but rebel groups are actively operating in Maguindanao.
Officials suspect that an improvised explosive device was used in the attack that totally cut off electricity in many areas in the province and neighboring municipalities. The blast affected the 138KV transmission line servicing the area.
The motive of the attack is still unknown, but previous bombing of steel pylons in Maguindanao and other provinces were largely blamed to rebels who were extorting money from NGCP. (Mindanao Examiner)
