SULU PROVINCE – Three Abu Sayyaf gunmen were killed in a firefight with security forces in Sulu province in southern Philippines where the notorious jihadist group is still holding 6 foreigners and three Filipino hostages.
The clash erupted in Panamao town on Friday afternoon after a military patrol chanced upon a band of jihadists and a firefight ensued between the two groups. There was no report of military casualties and that soldiers had recovered an automatic rifle and a pistol from the slain gunmen.
Troops handed over the slain Abu Sayyaf fighters to town officials, but their identities were not immediately known. Soldiers were still searching for the Abu Sayyaf hostages in Panamao and other towns where the jihadist group is actively operating.
The Abu Sayyaf had recently freed several hostages in Sulu, one of 5 provinces under the restive Muslim autonomous region. (Mindanao Examiner)
