
MAGUINDANAO (Mindanao Examiner / Feb. 9, 2013) – Police killed a man tagged as among those accused in the brutal slaying of dozens of journalists and civilians in Maguindanao province in the southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said police forces killed Maguid Amil in the village of Iginagampong in Datu Unsay town following a firefight. Amil opened fire on police raiders and a firefight ensued.
Amil was said to be a henchman of the Ampatuan clan accused in the brutal murders of 57. The Ampatuan patriarch, Andal Ampatuan, Sr. was among 200 people charged for the killings of mostly journalists covering a political caravan of rival Mangudadatu clan.
Ampatuan’s sons and other relatives were also implicated by the police in the mass murders that occurred in his home province where the political clan ruled for decades. The Ampatuans are currently detained at a facility in Taguig City. (Mindanao Examiner. Ferdinandh Cabrera)
