Army post attacked in Cotabato City

Chief Editor August 21, 2015

COTABATO CITY – The Philippine military said on Friday that 2 soldiers were injured after a grenade attack on an army post in Cotabato City.

The 40mm grenade was fired from a launcher and hit the detachment manned by Special Forces soldiers, according to Captain Jo-ann Petinglay, a spokeswoman for the 6th Infantry Division.

She said one of the wounded was in critical condition. “The grenade was believed fired from an M203 rifle and we are still investigating the attack,” she told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

The wounded soldiers were identified only as Private First Class Ona and Private Palino, both from the 5th Special Forces Battalion.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attack which occurred late Thursday along Notre Dame Avenue. Other reports said one of the soldiers had died from his wounds.

Previous attacks on military targets in Cotabato and nearby towns in Maguindanao have been largely blamed to the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters, but there were also random attacks on soldiers by civilians sympathetic to the rebels and their cause.

The BIFF has been fighting for a separate Muslim state in the southern region. (With a report from Rose Muneza)
