MANILA – The Philippines expressed optimism the next round of peace talks with the country’s largest Muslim rebel group, Moro Islamic Liberation Front,  in Kuala Lumpur would lead to the signing of the Annex on Normalization, a contentious issue, before a political accord is reached by both sides.

Secretary Herminio Coloma, Jr., a presidential spokesman, said the Aquino government is hopeful both sides will reach an agreement to finally end the decades long conflict in Mindanao.

“Maaring ito na ang huling yugto ng negosasyon sa pagitan ng pamahalaan at ng MILF (It could be the final round of talks between the government and the MILF),” Coloma said.

He said the peace agreement with the MILF would be a big boost to democracy and peace, especially in Mindanao.

Just last month, Presidential peace adviser Teresita Deles said peace negotiators will aim to finalize the remaining annex, as well as an addendum on the territorial issue on Bangsamoro waters.

Deles said the government aims to work closely with the Transition Commission and Congress to ensure the smooth passage of the Bangsamoro Basic Law.
