MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 16, 2013) – A Filipino ferry collided with a cargo ship in the central Philippines late on Friday and rescuers have been dispatched to save hundreds of passengers, but officials have not issued any statement about the number of casualties in the collision.

The Coast Guard said the tragedy occurred before 9 p.m. off Talisay City in Cebu province. Radio reports said the ferry MV Thomas Aquinas had sank after colliding with the cargo ship MV Sulpicio Express.

The ferry, which originated from the southern Philippines, was heading to the pier when it collided with the other ship. The ferry had more than 600 passengers.

Fishing boats in the area have joined the search and rescue operations

There was no immediate statement from both shipping lines. (Mindanao Examiner)
