Asian Open Universities to Convene in Manila for 30th Annual Conference

MANILA – The Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), comprised of 42 full member universities within Asia, will be holding its 30th Annual Conference on October 26-29 in Manila.

As host university, the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) is on full throttle in its preparation for this conference, supported by the Philippines’ Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Education (DepEd).

The AAOU2016 carries the theme “Open Education in Asia: Changing Perspectives.” This conference is open to all proponents, advocates and practitioners of Open and Distance e-Learning (ODeL). These may be academics, researchers, administrators, policymakers, practitioners, scholars and students who would like to take part in the critical reflection of developments in open education in Asia and the world.

The four-day event includes international experts to speak in four plenary sessions. Prof. Asha Kanwar, President and CEO of Commonwealth of Learning will speak about the conference theme “Open Education in Asia: Changing Perspectives.” The second session will focus on the “Trends in Learning Analytics” with the speakers being Dr. Dragan Gasevic, President, Society for Learning Analytics Research & Chair in Learning Analytics and Informatics, Moray House School Education & School of Informatics, University of Edinburgh;  and Dr. Qiong Wang, Director of X-Learning Center and Professor, Graduate School of Education, Peking University. 

The third plenary will focus on the “Trends in Digital Learning in Higher Education.” The speakers will be Dr. Cher Ping Lim, Professor, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, The Education University of Hong Kong & Principal Investigator, Digital Learning for Development (DL4D) Project; and Prof. Laura Czerniewicz, Director, Center for Innovation in Learning and Teaching, University of Cape Town. Lined up for the Plenary 4 to speak about “Open and Distance Learning in the 21st Century” are Prof. Melinda dela Peña Bandalaria, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Open University; Prof. Yoichi Okabe, President of the Open University of Japan; and  Prof. SA Ariadurai, Vice-Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
