ZAMBOANGA CITY – Former Deputy Speaker for Mindanao Abdulgani Salapuddin led politicians in Basilan province in filing their candidacy Monday for next year’s mid-term polls.
Basilan Representative Jim Saliman, elder brother of Mujiv Hataman, the governor of the Muslim autonomous region, also filed his candidacy for the provincial governor. While Hataman said he is seeking re-election.
Isabela City Vice Mayor Abdulbaki Ajibon – who survived a recent bomb attack that killed four of his security escorts and injured 11 more – is running for mayor against Al-Qaid Akbar, the son of Governor Jum Akbar who is running for a congressional seat.
Mayor Cherry Akbar, who is on her third and last term, is gunning for the vice mayoralty race in Isabela. Both the mayor and the governor are widows of Basilan Representative Wahab Akbar.
In Lamitan City also in Basilan – one of five provinces under the Muslim autonomous region – Mayor Rose Furigay, whose husband Roderick – the former mayor and now vice mayor – is also seeking re-election.
In the Muslim province of Sulu, the influential Governor Toto Tan, who belongs to a family of philanthropist, is also running again for the same post probably unopposed.
While in Zamboanga City, Sheila Covarrubias, the local government spokeswoman, said Mayor Beng Climaco is also filing her candidacy for re-election this week. Climaco is the local favorite among those running for the mayoralty post. (Mindanao Examiner)
