DAVAO CITY – Communist rebels ambushed Saturday a group of patrolling soldiers in southern Philippines wounding an infantryman in a fresh wave of attack against military targets.
The military’s Eastern Mindanao Command confirmed the ambush and said the attack occurred in the village of Camanlangan in Compostela Valley’s New Bataan town.
At least 20 New People’s Army rebels were said to have took part in the assault on members of the 25th Infantry Battalion. The ambush also sparked a 20-minute firefight, according to the military.
The wounded soldier, whose identity was not released by the military, had been rushed to hospital.
The NPA has been waging a secessionist war for many decades now in an effort to put up its own Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
