ZAMBOANGA CITY – One person was killed and at least a dozen other people were injured on Wednesday when a speeding passenger jeep rammed a concrete pole before rolling over on its side on a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said.
Police said the impact of the crash tore open the metal roof of the jeep and pinned the head of one passenger who died while being treated in the hospital. Three other passengers who were sitting on top of the jeep were also thrown several meters away, hitting the concrete road and one of them was critically injured.
Relatives of the lone fatality identified the victim as 30-year old Romualdo Apolinario.
The jeep’s driver Jan Michael Fabian fled the area only to surrender later to the police. “I avoided a motorcycle and hit on the break, but the jeep just went out of control and hit the concrete pole,” he said.
The motorcycle driver, a student of the Western Mindanao State University, said the jeep clipped his bike before ramming the pole. The jeep driver is facing criminal charges over the accident which occurred in Zamboanga highway.
Zamboanga City is notorious for its overloaded passenger jeeps and police authorities and the Land Transportation Office and even the local government cannot do anything to this illegal practice which is also a violation of traffic rules and regulations. (Mindanao Examiner)
