PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / May 23, 2013) – Communist rebels killed a government soldier and wounded three others in a clash in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, officials told the Mindanao Examiner on Thursday.
Officials said the fighting erupted in the town of Tambulig and that among those wounded in the fighting was platoon leader Lt. Jose Pamor, of the 55th Infantry Battalion. The clash near the village of Dimalinao lasted more than 30 minutes.
Some 60 New People’s Army rebels were involved in the fighting, but it was not immediately known if any of them had been killed or wounded in the clash.
Insp. Ariel Huesca, a regional police spokesman, said the wounded soldiers were rushed to hospital in Molave town.
He said security forces were sent to track down the rebels. “There is a joint police and military pursuit operation in the province to track down the rebels,” he said.
The NPA rebels have been fighting for decades for the establishment of a separate state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
