BASILAN – The Philippine Army said 11 Abu Sayyaf members have surrendered Monday in Basilan province in the Muslim autonomous region where security forces are battling the notorious jihadist group tied to the Islamic State.
The militants – Ring Langka, Tari and Halid Murasimin, M0ton Indama, Haimin Jalil, Marham Musana, Sadjara Hadjarama, Gulam Hajim, Haraward Sahirulla, Basri Laisun and Hasim Baliyung – surrendered in Sumisip town.
They also handed over assorted weapons, including a machine gun and rifle grenades, according to the army.
It was not immediately known whether those who surrendered will be charged in court since the Abu Sayyaf group is not included in the government amnesty program. Many militants had surrendered in the past decades in Basilan, but eventually returned to their group to fight government forces again in pursuit of their aspiration for the establishment of a strict Islamic state in Mindanao.
