ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 12, 2014) – Police detained 2 Iranian nationals who harassed local journalists covering a government order closing the foreigners’ illegal roadside eatery in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

Television journalists accused the foreigners Abdel Kamal and Mohammad Mohaimi of threatening them and for breaking their video cameras while authorities were serving the closure order of the eatery for operating without a permit.

“Mohammad Mohaimi and Abdel Kamal were detained at the Zamboanga City Police Office for public disturbance. Investigation disclosed that the duo were inside the videoke house located along Pilar Street, while thereat, Mohammad Moahimi was too noisy, thus, created disturbances inside the videoke house, while Abdel Kamal collard the reporter of RMN Radio Station, identified as Paul John Gotib. His camera was damaged by Abdel Kamal. Both Iranian nationals are detained at the Zamboanga City Police Office. Appropriate charges will be filed against them in court,” a police report said.

The Iranians also verbally abused the chief of the local licensing division, Benjie Barredo, for the closure order. Barredo inspected the establishment after receiving several complaints against the foreigners.

The eatery was earlier padlocked for several violations, but the foreigners continued on with their operation. They also put up a karaoke in the eatery which was not included in the original business permit.

The journalists said their outfit will file charges against the two foreigners. The Zamboanga Press Club condemned the attack on the journalists. (Mindanao Examiner)
