ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Aug. 3, 2013) – Two brothers were killed on Saturday after a landslide hit a village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said.

The children, aged 13 and 6, were trapped in their thatched house when the landslide struck following days of heavy rains in the village called Limpapa.

The area was also hit by landslide on Friday destroying several houses.
The latest landslide also destroyed at least three houses.

Police said more than 200 people were also evacuated in the village of Tugbungan due to flash floods after the river overflowed. The refugees are temporarily sheltered at a government school in the area.

The Zamboanga City Water District has also released excess water from its dam after it reached the critical level. It was villagers living near rivers to take precaution.
Mayor Maria Isabelle Salazar has deployed disaster response teams in flooded areas to rescue those affected by the floods. Salazar also inspected the flooded areas and told social workers to attend to villagers who need help. (With reports from Ely Dumaboc and Dodong Ramos)
