ZAMBOANGA CITY – Two army soldiers were killed in an ambush Sunday by the rebel group Abu Sayyaf in the restive province of Basilan in the Muslim autonomous region, officials said.
Officials said the two soldiers were travelling on a motorcycle when rebels ambushed them in Tumahubong village in Sumisip town, a known stronghold of the notorious group blamed for the spate of attacks and ransom kidnappings in the region and nearby Zamboanga city.
The rebels escaped after the attack leaving the bloodied bodies of the two men behind. Troops who responded to the burst of gunfire retrieved the cadavers while other units were sent to track down the ambushers.
Officials said the slain soldiers were members of the 64th Infantry Battalion which is battling the Abu Sayyaf group.
It was not immediately known why the military and police in the area failed to detect the Abu Sayyaf and prevent the attack. (Ely Dumaboc)
