ZAMBOANGA CITY – Social workers continue to assists over 2000 people left homeless by a huge fire that hit two areas in Isabela City in Basilan province in the Muslim autonomous region in Mindanao.
Reports from the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Bureau of Fire Protection said some 500 houses were burned in the conflagration Saturday. But officials said there were no reports of casualties.
The fire razed houses in Zone 1 and Zone 2 in Kaum Purnah village and officials were still investigating the cause of the blaze. Most of the houses burned were made from lumber.
The mayor of Isabela, Cherry Akbar, has ordered social workers to distribute relief goods to fire victims and appealed to the public for cash and food donations.
Local radio station, dxNO-Radyo Komunidad, also launched a campaign to seek relief donations from residents to help the homeless now staying in temporary shelters in government schools in Isabela City. (E. Dumaboc)
