CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Security forces raided a hideout of the communist group New People’s Army and captured three insurgents in Butuan City in southern Philippines.
Police said the four were tracked down in Tungao village early Friday after weeks of surveillance operations. The raiders also seized assorted weapons, including automatic rifles, munitions, grenades and improvised explosives, including various communist propaganda and cellular phones.
Chief Superintendent Rolando Felix, the regional police commander in Caraga, said those arrested are facing a string of criminal charges.
Roldan Bunggolto, head of the NPA’s Militia ng Bayan; his deputy Danilo Acania and Jek-Jek Borja, who are all wanted by the authorities for murders in Agusan del Norte province. There was no immediate statement from the NPA on the arrest of the trio.
President-elect Rodrigo Duterte has said he would open peace talks with the NPA, which has been fighting for a separate state in the country. Duterte also said he would free all political prisoners, including members and leaders of the Communist Party of the Philippines and the National Democratic Front of the Philippines.
