3 soldiers wounded in Sayyaf attack

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Abu Sayyaf rebels ambushed an army patrol and wounding 3 soldiers on Friday in the southern Philippines, police said.

Police said the soldiers were in a convoy when rebels attacked them in the village called Bungkaong in Patikul town. They were heading to the capital town of Jolo when the rebels attack the members of the 35th Infantry Battalion, according to Sulu police chief Abraham Orbita.

“Government troops sustained three wounded-in-action while undetermined casualties on the enemy side,” Orbita told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

He said the attack sparked a 30 minute firefight. The ambushers were led by Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Ajang-Ajang and the allied group Lucky 9, whose members were mostly young men who are also drug users.

However, the Western Mindanao Command said only two soldiers were wounded in the fighting. “The wounded soldiers are now in stable condition after being treated in hospital,” its spokeswoman, Marine Capt. Maria Rowena Muyuela, said in a separate report.
She said Col. Alan Arrojado, commander of the Joint Task Group Sulu, ordered troops to pursue the Abu Sayyaf. (Mindanao Examiner)
