DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Nov. 5, 2012) – Communist insurgents killed 4 government soldiers in an attack in Davao City, a known stronghold of the New People’s Army in the southern Philippines, officials said Monday.
Officials said the four were travelling in three motorcycles when rebels ambushed them in the village of Mapula in Paquibato District over the weekend.
Army spokesman Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza said the soldiers, all members of the 60th Infantry Battalion, were heading back to their detachment when rebels attacked them. He said at least 10 rebels were believed behind the ambush.
“They were on their way back to their detachment after marketing when the incident happened,” Paniza said, adding the soldiers were all in civilian clothes.
The slain soldiers were identified Ahian Vir Doler, Marvin Lauronal, Noel Sigan and Marcelo Himaya.
There was no immediate statement from the local government about the latest attack. The rebels have been fighting for decades for the establishment of a communist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
