PAGADIAN CITY – Some 60,000 bags of rice, believed smuggled from neighboring Malaysia, were seized by Philippine authorities off the southern province of Zamboanga Sibugay.
The Coast Guard led the Sunday operation and intercepted a cargo boat off Olutanga Island that resulted in the confiscation of the rice estimated to be worth over P120 million.
The boat was first detected off Tawi-Tawi province and sailed through the Sulu Sea and eventually headed to Zamboanga Sibugay. The Coast Guard confirmed the seizure of the cargo after the boat’s captain allegedly failed to show any importation documents.
The Bureau of Customs have been alerted on the seizure of the rice whose brand name is “Asahi.” (Mindanao Examiner)
