COTABATO CITY – At least 7 soldiers were wounded in an ambush before dawn Saturday in the troubled province of Maguindanao in the Muslim autonomous region in southern Philippines, officials said.
Officials said the soldiers – all from the Philippine Marines – were travelling in a military truck when a roadside bomb exploded and followed by automatic gunfire. The attack in the village of Nuru in North Upi town sparked a gun battle until a military reinforcement arrived and rescued the embattled soldiers who were rushed to hospital.
The wounded have identified as Major Romulo Ducay, Corporal Alvin Jay Sangadan, Arnel Jun, Oliver Albo and Ryan Cabual; and Private First Class Gerwin Perez and Johnny Panday.
It was unclear who were behind the ambush and officials from the Western Mindanao Command and 6th Infantry Division did not release any statement, although the police confirmed the attack. Provincial Governor Esmael Mangudadatu and Regional Governor Mujiv Hataman were also silent on the ambush.
The province is a known lair of Moro and communist rebels who were largely blamed by the police and military as behind random attacks on government targets. (Mindanao Examiner)
