
DAVAO CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Jan. 22, 2013) – Philippine authorities on Tuesday said tens of thousands of people were affected by flash floods in Mindanao following days of heavy rains brought about by a cold front affecting the southern region.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said more than 84,000 people in 80 villages in Regions 10, 11 and 12 were directly hit by the calamity and that over 33,000 people are now staying in various shelters in Mindanao.
It said social workers have distributed some P5 million in food aid to the affected areas where rivers overflowed.
Many roads in Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental provinces, including Davao City remain impassable to vehicles and some areas are still without electricity. There were immediate reports of casualties in the calamity. (Mindanao Examiner)
