MANILA (Mindanao Examiner / June 29, 2014) – Police are investigating the death of a college student who succumbed to injuries during a fraternity hazing in Manila.
Police said the body of the student – of College of St. Benilde – was found in a condominium unit while three more were in the hospital due to injuries they received during the hazing.
The youth group Anakbayan has condemned the victim’s death due to fraternity hazing. “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family, classmates, and friends of the victim. We call on the authorities and all concerned parties to swiftly and decisively act to bring to justice the perpetrators of this most heinous of crimes.”
“We renew our call on all student organizations and associations, especially all fraternities, to discard the usage of brutal, violent, and fatal hazing. Instead, student organizations should devote their time and efforts to providing community service, especially to the communities of the marginalized and the poor in urban and rural areas. We direct this proposal to all universities and academic communities across the country,” Vencer Crisostomo, the group’s national chairman, said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.
Crisostomo also called on the fraternity’s alumni, as well as those of other fraternities, to help in ending the barbaric tradition of Greek-lettered societies, once and for all.
“We call on the authorities to leave no stone unturned. Identify, arrest, and prosecute the suspects of this dastardly crime immediately. How many more will have to die before the authorities act decisively?” he asked. (Mindanao Examiner)
