PAGADIAN CITY – Police forces launched an operation to rescue two children and a teenager who were kidnapped by gunmen in Pitogo town in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, a spokesman said Wednesday.
Insp. Dahlan Samuddin said at least 10 gunmen were involved in the kidnapping which occurred late Tuesday afternoon. He said the gang seized the trio – two years old, three years old and a 17-year old – after gunmen failed to abduct bakery owner Chzarenia Kapa Sajulga.
“Three minors were kidnapped by more or less ten armed men at the public market of Barangay Poblacion in Pitogo at about 5:30 p.m. of March 31,” he said.
He said the gunmen arrived on two motorized boats and went straight to the bakery, but its alert owner ran inside a room and locked the door. The gang tried, but failed to open the door and eventually fled after firing a shot at the door knob.
Policemen who responded to the shooting clashed with the gunmen, but the gang used their victims as shield and managed to escape.
It was unknown whether the armed were members of the Abu Sayyaf or other rebel group operating in the province. (Mindanao Examiner)
