ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / May 24, 2014) – Motorcycle gunmen shot and seriously wounded another Indian national in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said Saturday.

Police said the 28-year old Amandeep Kour Singh was collecting money he lent out to a store owner in the village of Divisoria when the gunmen arrived and without warning fired one shot in his head and fled after the Thursday attack.

A medical response team rushed Singh to the hospital, police said, adding it recovered a bullet casing of a .45-caliber pistol from the scene.

The motive of the attack is still unknown, but Singh was the second Indian shot in two weeks in Zamboanga which is notorious for its unabated gun attacks blamed on hired killers.

Motorcycle gunmen also shot Sukhjinder Singh, 28, while he was driving his motorcycle in the village of Putik on May 8. He was rushed to hospital, but died during an operation from wounds in the head and body.

Singh, who was also engaged in money lending, just came from his cousin’s house and was heading home, when the attack occurred. Police said the Indian man was shot with a .45-caliber pistol. It was unknown if he was related to Amandeep.

Late last year, two Filipino muggers also attacked a 23-year old Indian trader, Harpreet, in Zamboanga City where he operates a small business. Harpreet, who buys and sells small appliances, lost his cell phone to the men who also tried to steal his motorcycle in the village of Tetuan.

A small group of Indian nationals engage in various businesses have been living in Zamboanga and some had married local residents to legitimize their stay in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
