CEBU CITY is to build P10-million detachment ponds in upland villages to avert potential water crisis due to the continuing dry spell that is now affecting not only the Visayas region, but the whole country.
Local Agriculturist Joelito Baclayon said the project is likely to start September. Seeing the threat of a water crisis due to the El Nino phenomena, the Cebu City government will pursue the plan of building detachment ponds in 28 villages, he said.
Baclayon said there will be six 100-square meter ponds that will be made in each of the 28 farming villages. “If the water dries up, these ponds will serve as small farm reservoirs which are way better than natural springs,” he said.
Baclayon also said they are in the midst of the design planning and purchasing requests for the project while negotiating with the farmers whose lots are potential locations of the detachment ponds. “I have advised farmers to water their crops early in the morning and late in the afternoon and not during peak hours in order to conserve water,” he said.
The National Irrigation Authority has reported that dams in Central Visayas are now near the critical level.
It was in 2009 and 2010 where great number of losses to the agriculture sector were noted brought about by the El Nino. (Ferliza C. Contratista. With a report from Caren P. Gabisay)
