DAVAO CITY – Government troops clashed with Maoist rebels in the southern Philippine province of Davao del Sur, but security officials said there were no reports of casualties on both sides.
Army Capt. Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, said the fighting erupted in the village of Mangulibas after patrolling troops on Monday crossed path with some 30 New People’s Army rebels.
He said soldiers from the 73rd Infantry Battalion fought with rebels for almost 30 minutes until the gunmen broke ito smaller groups and escaped deeper into the village. He said troops recovered an M16 automatic rifle and a rifle grenade left behind by rebels.
The NPA has been waging decades of separatist war in the country, but there are on-going efforts between the two sides to restart the long-stalled peace talks. (Mindanao Examiner)
