ZAMBOANGA CITY – Unidentified men exploded a grenade at a police station in Zamboanga City before dawn Monday, the second attack in the two months on a village notorious for its drug problems.
Police said two men on a motorcycle were behind the attack at the police station in Ayala village. No policemen were reported killed or injured in the blast, but it damaged a prowl car parked outside the station, according to Insp. Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman.
Samuddin said the motorcycle men sped after the explosion. “The suspects fled away to the west direction. The police vehicle was hit with shrapnel. A follow-up operation was launched by the police to track down the assailants,” he said.
He said an MK2 grenade was used in the attack. The motive of the attack is still unknown, but the same police station was also bombed in April that left three people injured.
The bomb was planted on a police patrol car parked outside the station and the powerful explosion damaged the vehicle and several motorcycles nearby.
Among the injured were a 14-year old boy and Magdalena Araneta, 60; and Elasebio Enriquez, 76.
No individual claimed responsibility for the attack, but witnesses said they saw a boy running away from the truck before the explosion. Police said the bombing was connected to its anti-drug campaign in the village and the arrest of a suspected drug lord. (Mindanao Examiner)
