Candies poison over 600 in Southern Philippines

Chief Editor July 10, 2015

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Hundreds of mostly students were reported to have fallen ill on Friday after eating candies made from durian fruit in southern Philippines.

Health and police authorities were investigating the food poisoning that occurred in the town of Marihatag and Tandag City in Surigao del Sur province. Several people selling candies were being questioned by the police in connection to the poisoning.

Those who ate the candies suffered from stomach pains and puked and had to be rushed to hospitals. It was unknown whether the candies sold outside the schools were contaminated with chemicals or had expired.

Other reports said unidentified men distributed the durian candies, and that as many as 600 people or more were poisoned by this.

Samples of the candies were sent to laboratory to determine its ingredients and origin, or if it came from China or had been locally produced.

The poisoning occurred in the middle of a government investigation into the proliferation of so-called fake rice in nearby Davao City. There were also reports that fake noodles were being sold in markets in the region. The rice and noodles were believed to have originated from China where they had been discovered in recent months.
