ZAMBOANGA CITY – Giant waves washed away houses and destroyed a small pier in the island town of Sitangkai in the southern Philippine province of Tawi-Tawi, officials said over the weekend.
Officials said a mosque was also destroyed when huge waves swept on a coastal village. The cost of the damage was not immediately known, but several tons of seaweeds were affected by the waves after the pier was badly damaged.
The port was being used by boats to transport seaweeds from Sitangkai to other areas in the province.
There were no reports of casualties, according to officials. The southern region was battered by heavy rains and strong winds due to typhoon Falcon. (E. Dumaboc)
