3 children injured in grenade attack in Zamboanga City

Chief Editor August 26, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Three children were wounded in a grenade attack Wednesday on a coastal village in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines, police said.

Inspector Dahlan Samuddin, a regional police spokesman, said the children were injured in the blast just outside the house of village chieftain Diosterides Librado, who was likely the target.

“We are still investigating the attack. This could be political. Three children were also injured in the blast,” he told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

He identified the wounded as Jayson Nalzaro, 7; Thirdy Padayao, 6; and Myka Padayao, 9, who all sustained minor injuries in the body.

Librado was unscathed from the blast, but this was the second attempt on his life. A grenade was also lobbed in his house in November 2013 ahead of village elections and Librado was severely wounded that both his legs had been amputated.

Two people – the village secretary and a councilman – were killed and 11 others wounded in that attack which occurred while Librado was meeting with his campaign leaders and other candidates.

Librado won his second term hands down despite not being able to campaign. His supporters worked hard to campaign for his victory.

Supporters said Librado is an honest politician who works hard for the development of the village and its people and that no one comes closer to him in terms of dedication to work.

No individual or group claimed responsibility for the latest attack, but Mayor Beng Climaco has ordered the police to investigate the attack and tighten security in the village.

“Mayor Beng has ordered a thorough investigation into the attack and for the immediate arrest of the suspect in the blast,” Climaco’s spokeswoman, Sheila Covarrubias, said in a separate interview. (Mindanao Examiner)
