DAVAO CITY – Communist insurgents have seized a government soldier that the military claimed was unarmed and part of a group conducting peace mission in Agusan del Sur province in southern Philippines.
Army Captain Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, did not release the name of the soldier, but he is a member of the 26th Infantry Battalion. He was taken prisoner by the New People’s Army on September 19 in San Luis town.
He said the soldier was travelling on a motorcycle with a village official, Reneboy Galino, when rebels stopped them at a checkpoint in Policapio village.
Galino was not harmed by the rebels, numbering more than 30 and among them were 5 women fighters.
“The soldiers of 26th Infantry Battalion are pursuing the rebels,” Caber said, adding, the police also launched an investigation into the abduction.
The fate of the soldier is still unknown and the NPA did not issue any statement about the abduction, but is likely to admit responsibility for the daring operation. The NPA has been fighting for many decades now for the establishment of a separate state. (Mindanao Examiner)
