PAGADIAN CITY – Abu Sayyaf rebels have freed Tuesday a kidnapped southern Filipino town mayor after more than 6 months in captivity on the island of Sulu, security officials said.

Officials said Naga town Mayor Gemma Adana, who was kidnapped from her home on April 6, was freed through the intercession of religious leaders and local officials in Sulu’s Indanan town. Adana was handed over to the provincial government and eventually turned over to authorities before bringing her to hospital for medical examination

Captain Roy Trinidad, a spokesman for the military’s Joint Task Group Sulu, has confirmed the release of the politician, who was presented to Governor Toto Tan before being transported to Zamboanga.

“She was fetched by JTGS personnel for medical check-up and debriefing and her transport to Zamboanga City,” Trinidad told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

It was unknown whether Adana’s family paid ransom or not for her safe release.

Six masked gunmen, all clad in camouflage uniform, barged into Adana’s house in the village of Taytay Manubo in Zamboanga Sibugay province and dragged her to a waiting speed boat. She was eventually brought to the island in the Sulu Archipelago where she was held against her will. (Mindanao Examiner)
