
ZAMBOANGA CITY – Mayor Beng Climaco has recognized and praised the contributions of various groups and people, including police and military, for the peaceful celebration of the Hermosa Festival.
“Gracias a Dios y Nuestra Senora La Virgen del Pilar por el guia y proteccion que ya resulta na pacifico y exitoso celebracion de Zambo Hermosa Festival. We commend the residents, the police and military, force multipliers and volunteers for their tireless efforts,” the mayor said.
Among those feted were Lieutenant General Rustico Guerrero, Major General Conrado Parra Jr., Lieutenant Colonel Eliglen Villaflor, Chief Superintendent Miguel Antonio Jr., Superintendents Debold Sinas, Angelito Casimiro and Ariel Huesca, Colonels Arthur Biyo, Nixon Fortes and Entien Calaoag, Lt. Junior Grade Jimmy Berbo, and Rear Admiral Primitivo Gopo.
And also Globe Telecom, San Miguel Brewery Corporation, Coca-Cola Bottlers Philippines Incorporated, Universal Robina Corporation, Pepsi-Cola Products Philippines, Nature Spring Water, Cignal TV, Alavar Bed and Breakfast, West Metro Medical Center, LM Metro Hotel, and Ticket One, and volunteer groups Ignite, Kabalikat Civicom, and D’Alert.
Thousands of people participated in the celebration in honor of the feast of the Virgin Mary and the Zamboanga Hermosa Festival was one of the most awaited and biggest Catholic events in southern Philippines.
Climaco led local officials and residents in the joyous celebration of the annual festival. Security was tight and policemen and soldiers were deployed around downtown Zamboanga to ensure peaceful celebration of the event which drew local and foreign tourists to the “City of Flowers.”
The festival also featured week-long novena masses, cultural shows, agricultural fairs, art, photo and flower garden exhibits, torch parades, fireworks, and carnivals. It was the biggest and grandest so far in the last decade.
Zamboanga City had been under Spanish rule in the past and was also used as a base for American soldiers. The area around Zamboanga Peninsula has been occupied by indigenous people as early as 30,000 years ago. The first inhabitants were the Subanons and Lutaos and later, the Islamized ethnic groups of Samals, Bajaus, Tausugs, and Yakans. (Jasmine Mohammadsali)
