Soldier runs amuck, leaves 15 casualties in Southern Philippines

Chief Editor October 22, 2015

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Philippine army soldiers killed an infantry man who went on a rampage on Thursday that left 15 casualties inside a military base in the southern Filipino province of Basilan, officials said.

Captain Roy Trinidad, a military spokesman, said among the dead in the shooting were 2 officers and four foot soldiers who were all attending a seminar at the headquarters of the 64th Infantry Battalion in Upper Cabengbeng village in Sumisip town.

The gunner, Corporal Tahiruddinn Taha, was shot dead by other soldiers in the base, he said.

It was not immediately known what triggered the attack, but Taha just came back from a long vacation when he ran amuck in the base, shooting everyone on sight until he was gunned down.

“Two officers and four enlisted men were killed by Taha in the shooting,” Trinidad told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner. “Initial reports stated that the suspect had personal problems and had just arrived from his furlough. The police and military are investigating this incident.”

No other details were made available by the authorities on the rampage. (Mindanao Examiner)
