Dismissed Cagayan de Oro mayor gets to stay in power

Chief Editor November 14, 2015

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The Court of Appeals has ordered ousted Cagayan de Oro City mayor Oscar Moreno to stay in office – at least until his lawyers challenge the decision of the Ombudsman to unseat the politician.

Ombudsman Conchita Morales dismissed Moreno following charges that he entered into a settlement agreement with Ajinomoto Philippines – to pay only P300,000 instead of its original local business tax deficiency of P2.9 million – without prior authorization from the Sanguniang Panglunsod in violation of the Local Government Code.

Moreno, who is running for re-election in next year’s polls, along with City Treasurer Glenn Banez was slapped with perpetual disqualification to hold public office and forfeiture of all retirement benefits.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government served Moreno’s dismissal order and installed Vice Mayor Ian Acenas as the new mayor.

Moreno’s lawyers said they secured a status quo ante order from the Court of Appeals which is reviewing the Ombudsman’s dismissal order. There was no immediate statement from the Ombudsman. (Mindanao Examiner)
