ZAMBOANGA CITY – A lone gunman shot and killed two people and wounded a village chieftain in an attack in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga Sibugay, police said Friday.
Police said the victims Jose Samosa, 48, and Margarita Banguanga, 53, were both killed in the shooting that also wounded the woman’s husband, Carmelo – the village chieftain of Cayamcam in Tungawan town, just outside Zamboanga City.
Chief Superintendent Miguel Antonio, the regional police chief, has ordered an investigation into the attack which occurred late Thursday. He said the victims were resting on the porch of Banguanga’s house when the gunman arrived and without warning opened fire on the group.
Police investigators also recovered at least 5 spent shells of .45-caliber pistol from the area
No individual claimed responsibility for the attack and police were investigating the motive of the killings. “There is an ongoing investigation into the attack,” Antonio said.
Just last month, unidentified gunmen also killed the town’s mayor Randy Climaco in an ambush near the village of Batungan. Climaco, a seasoned politician, was heading to the town’s center when gunmen ambushed his truck that also wounded 6 others travelling with him.
Climaco, who was running for vice mayor in the town in next year’s polls, just filed his candidacy. It was not immediately known whether the latest attack was connected to politics or not. (Mindanao Examiner)
