FOLLOWING the Sinulog 2015 celebration for the Feasts of Santo Niño de Cebú, thousands of candles of different colors filled kiosk of Magellan’s Cross at the Plaza Sugbo fronting Cebu City Hall.

Catholic devotees left candles, including notes of prayers and petition, and small cash as part of their tradition. Thousands of Catholic faithful and pilgrims flocked to Cebu every January to fulfill their devotion to the Holy Child.

Magellan’s Cross is one of the most important heritage sites in the “Queen City of the South.” It was planted by Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan on April 14, 1521 when he baptized the first Christian Filipinos, Rajah Humabon and Queen Juana.

The historical landmark which symbolizes that Cebu is the Cradle of Christianity in Asia was also affected by the 7.2 magnitude October 15, 2013 earthquake. It is currently undergoing rehabilitation and repair. (Greggy Jiggs Senados)
