Yokozuna Kakuryu (4-2) kept Aoiyama winless, overpowering the bigger No. 2 maegashira to win Friday’s final bout at the New Year Grand Sumo Tournament at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo.
Yokozuna Hakuho continued rolling along, spinning down komusubi Tochinoshin (2-4) to keep his record spotless, and ozeki Kotoshogiku bull-rushed No. 1 maegashira Shohozan (1-5) to keep pace with Hakuho and unbeaten No. 8 maegashira Takayasu.
Yokozuna Harumafuji (5-1) had little trouble topping No. 4 maegashira Kyokushuho (2-4), while ozeki Kisenosato (4-2) outlasted No. 3 maegashira Ichinojo (1-5).
Sekiwake Tochiozan picked his third win with a forfeit as Mongolian ozeki Terunofuji was forced out of the tournament by a broken right collarbone suffered on the fourth day of the basho. It’s uncertain if he’ll be ready to wrestle in the next tournament in March.
Ozeki Goeido (4-2) also won by default over No. 1 maegashira Aminishiki (2-4), who had to withdraw from the tournament after coming down with influenza.(The Japan News)
