DAVAO CITY – Government troops killed a woman – who was an alleged member of the communist rebel group New People’s Army – in a clash in Davao Occidental province in southern Philippines.
The army’s 10th Infantry Division said the fighting erupted in the village of Datu Danwata in Malita town after patrolling troops ran into a group of rebels, sparking a running gun battle that killed the woman.
It said soldiers – from the 73rd Infantry Battalion – also recovered an automatic rifle following a fierce firefight that lasted about 30 minutes.
The identity of the lone fatality remains unknown, but troops were ordered to track down about 20 other rebels.
The rebels are fighting for a separate Maoist state in the country. (Mindanao Examiner)
