Peruvian justice officials have received a US petition to extradite Manuel Burga, the former head of the Peruvian Football Federation, on charges linked to the global FIFA corruption scandal, his attorney yesterday.
The petition arrived last week, attorney Cesar Nakazaki told Ovacion sports radio. “They have informed us, but they have not formally notified us of the request,” Nakazaki said.
Nakazaki said that once his client, who has been held in a Lima jail since December 7, is served the papers he will have to study the request to mount a defence.
Burga, 58, led Peru’s football from 2002 to 2014.
According to the US request, Burga is accused of receiving illicit payments in exchange for broadcast rights for several editions of the Copa America tournament.
