Troops rescue abducted Zamboanga Chinese trader

Chief Editor September 21, 2016

PAGADIAN CITY – Government troops in Sulu province rescued Wednesday morning a 60-year old Chinese trader abducted in Zamboanga del Norte’s Sirawai town before she could be handed over to the Abu Sayyaf group, army officials said.

Officials said soldiers from the 35th Infantry Battalion safely recovered Martina Lyn Yee shortly after she and her six captors landed in the shoreline of Kajatian village in Indanan town. The gunmen abandoned the woman upon seeing the soldiers.

Army Brigadier General Arnel dela Vega said troops were immediately sent to the village after receiving information on the presence of the armed group and their hostage.

“The rescue operation was the result of continuous intelligence build-up immediately after receiving information of the group’s plan to handover said kidnapped victim to Sulu-based Abu Sayyaf group,” Dela Vega said.

“Upon arrival of the operating troops, the armed men hastily left and abandoned the said kidnapped victim for fear of being caught by the pursuing government troops,” he added.

He said soldiers also seized the gunmen’s new speed boat fitted with three outboard motors used in transporting Yee, who was kidnapped on September 19 in downtown Sirawai.

Police earlier reported that Yee’s name is Christina, whose family owns the Ben Yee store in Sirawai.

Dela Vega did not say who were behind the abduction of Yee. (Mindanao Examiner)
