ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 11, 2013) – Globe Telecom has set up a “Libreng Tawag” station in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines to allow residents affected by clashes between security and rebel forces to send text messages and make local calls.
The Libreng Tawag station has been set up at the Joaquin F. Enriquez Memorial Sports Complex, an evacuation center in the village of San Jose Cawa-Cawa currently housing thousands of evacuees.
Globe Telecom said it will put up four more Libreng Tawag stations in various evacuation centers and mobile hospitals at the Western Mindanao State University gymnasium, where patients of Zamboanga General Hospital are temporarily evacuated.
Fernando Esguerra, officer-in-charge for the Globe Corporate Social Responsibility, said through the Libreng Tawag stations, evacuees can text and make local calls to all networks, as well as international calls, all for free.
“We are closely monitoring the situation in Zamboanga to determine other areas that need immediate assistance,” he said in a statement sent to the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner)
