ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / Sept. 8, 2013) – Hundreds of villagers have benefited from a joint a medical mission and feeding program in Zamboanga city in southern Philippines, officials said on Sunday.

Officials said the humanitarian mission, held in the village of Vitali, was spearheaded by the Police Regional Office in Western Mindanao and the Western Mindanao State University, and supported by the Regional Health Office in Western Mindanao.

“The medical mission is a manifestation that the Police Regional Office and its leaders are not only concerned about public safety and internal security of the community, but also of the well-being and physical condition of its constituents whom its members are protecting,” said Chief Inspector Ariel Huesca, a regional police spokesman.

Village chieftain Jose Alavar has praised all those who were behind the humanitarian mission, dubbed as “MEDCAP (Medical Civil Action Program) for Peace.”

Huesca said apart from providing free dental and medical services, the MEDCAP team also handed out groceries to children.

Those behind the humanitarian mission were Chief Superintendent Juanito Vaño, Jr., the regional police chief; Dr. Milabel Ho, president of the Western Mindanao State University and Dean Carla Ochotorena; Senior Superintendent Ramon Ochotorena, deputy regional director for operations; Senior Superintendent Nelson DC Eucogco, chief of the Regional Police Community Relations Division.
