PAGADIAN CITY – Communist insurgents raided a construction site and torched vehicles and heavy equipment in the southern Filipino province of Zamboanga del Sur, police said Monday.
Police said there were no reports of casualties from the weekend attack on Ramona Construction in the village of Licabang in Dumingag town. At least 15 gunmen raided the area, according to Chief Inspector Helen Galvez, a regional police spokesperson.
She said policemen, backed by soldiers, pursued the attackers after receiving the report, but did not catch up with the raiders. “They poured gasoline and set fire on several parked trucks and heavy equipment near the construction bunkhouse,” she said, adding, the damage to property could reach over P3 million.
Galvez said security forces were dispatched on Monday to track down the rebels in the town’s hinterlands on orders from the regional police commander, Chief Superintendent Billy Beltran. “Police and military forces are now conducting manhunt operation against the armed suspects who fled immediately after the incident,” she said.
Beltran also appealed to the public to report to authorities any sightings of the rebels in their community. There was no immediate statement from the separatist rebel group which is currently holding peace talks with the Duterte government. Both sides are expected to resume peace negotiations next month in the Netherlands. (Mindanao Examiner)
