‘Unfair to omit Israel’ when attacking nations that commit crimes against humanity

Chief Editor September 23, 2017

MALAYSIA has called on the international community to abide by and uphold the principles of the United Nations, and to treat Israel and others who commit crimes against humanity equally.

Foreign Minister Anifah Aman said the international community should not be silent on Israel while passionately taking on other regimes in a discriminatory way. “Malaysia reiterates the right to self-determination of the Palestinian people to establish an independent and sovereign State of Palestine with al-Quds al-Sharif as its capital,” he said in his speech during the Annual Coordination Meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Foreign Ministers, held on the sidelines of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, in New York yesterday.

He said Malaysia commended the efforts undertaken by OIC member states, particularly their various contributions in support of the Palestinian cause under the Islamic Solidarity Fund. “From 1976 until 2017, the total amount of contributions to support Palestine and its people had reached more than US$26 million (RM109 million). Indeed, this reflects the commitment and steadfastness of the OIC and its member states in supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people.”

Anifah added that Malaysia was gravely concerned about the violence perpetrated against the Rohingya in Rakhine state, Myanmar, since August 25, which had resulted in the loss of countless lives. “I would like to take this opportunity to commend the noble efforts of Bangladesh in addressing the plight of the Rohingya. In this regard, I call on all OIC member states to continue to extend assistance to the Rohingya.”

He also called on the Myanmar government to end the violence, and allow immediate and unimpeded access for the delivery of humanitarian assistance. Anifah said OIC member countries should stand together in condemning violence and terrorism in all their forms and manifestations. “We must deny them sanctuary and resources in the global fight against Daesh,” he said, referring to the Islamic State.

He said OIC member countries should endeavour to make the body a platform to unite the Muslim ummah, and maintain the spirit of fraternity and solidarity. “As a founding member of the organisation, Malaysia believes in the noble objectives of the OIC in contributing to international peace and security. We will continue to play our role as facilitator in the peace process in southern Thailand and southern Philippines. It is our hope that our involvement in resolving these conflicts will contribute to security and stability in the region.” (Bernama)
