ZAMBOANGA CITY (Mindanao Examiner / July 13, 2013) – At least a dozen people were injured after a wooden stage collapsed inside a cockpit arena on Saturday night in the southern Filipino port city of Zamboanga, reports said.
It said the stage, which is also being used as seats for customers, collapsed due to the huge number of people betting and watching a cock fight in the village of Ayala.
The injured aficionados were rushed to hospitals.
The cock fight, which started shortly after noontime, was stopped following the accident.
The mayor of Zamboanga, Maria Isabelle Salazar, rushed to the hospitals to see the condition of the injured. “We are here to ensure the injured victims are being taken care of,” Salazar told reporters.
Cock fighting is a favorite gambling game among many locals and Zamboanga has dozens of similar arena across the city. (Mindanao Examiner)
