COTABATO CITY – Anti-narcotics agent arrested a southern Filipino town mayor following a raid Friday in his house where illegal drugs and firearms had been recovered.
Mayor Aniceto Lopez, of Sarangani’s Maasim town, was not in the house when the raiders arrived, but he yielded hours later after seeking assistance from fellow politicians to arrange his peaceful surrender. Lopez was also bringing with a booklet containing his alleged drug transactions.
Members of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency raided the house following a long surveillance operation. Lopez is also being investigated by authorities after intelligence reports suggested that the politician was allegedly supporting rebel groups in the restive region.
President Rodrigo Duterte has previously linked many politicians and even rebel groups in the illegal drug trade. (Mindanao Examiner)
