Chinese-Filipino businessman murdered in Zamboanga City

Editor February 22, 2018

ZAMBOANGA CITY – Motorcycle gunmen killed a Chinese-Filipino businessman in a daring broad daylight attack Friday at the family’s gasoline depot in Zamboanga City in southern Philippines.

The 44-year old Andrew Chan Wee just arrived with his mother in a van when the gunmen opened fire at him shortly after stepping out of the vehicle. The woman was unhurt from the shooting which occurred in the village of Talon-Talon.

One of two security guards was also shot by the gunmen, but missed their target as the duo escaped after shooting Wee many times. Employees rushed Wee to the hospital, but was already dead from multiple bullet wounds in the body.

Wee’s friends said he just came home from Cebu for a brief vacation and was supposed to return to the province this week when the killing occurred. The motive of the murder is still unknown, but Wee’s brother manages the gasoline station. He was not there when the killing occurred.

His friends said Wee was a happy man and kind-hearted. “He was soft-spoken and easy to get along with. He was really kind, kind-hearted to everybody and even to their employees,” one of his classmates said. “We are so heart-broken and could not believe this had happened to Andy. We are all shocked to learn about his sudden demise.”

Wee’s family owned several commercial buildings in Zamboanga and Cebu and belongs to a prominent clan here. Gun attacks and killings are not uncommon in Zamboanga City where hired killers actively operate. There are also few security cameras installed in public places and roads or villages in Zamboanga and less checkpoints and police and military patrol which embolden killers to strike at will.
