
PAGADIAN CITY (Mindanao Examiner / May 13, 2013) – Five people were killed and 7 others wounded by gunmen in separate attacks in the town of Bayog in the southern Philippine province of Zamboanga del Sur, police and military said.
Gunmen first killed Roy Mendoza and Dexter Calunsag, who were both working for mayoralty candidate Julieto Monding. The two victims were traveling on a motorcycle and heading home when four gunmen attacked them at around 10 a.m. The attackers were later fetched by a pick-up truck and fled towards downtown Bayog. Authorities said prior to the attack, unidentified gunmen also raided a house in the village of Buuan also in Bayog town and shot a group of people who are also followers or Monding. Three people were killed in the attack – Julito Isig, Junicio Manos and Vivencio Balido – and 7 others wounded namely Elchito Nonggong, Hernani Nonggong, Bernie Nonggong, Jimboy Bulay, Nono Kwap, Sinay Tungcasan and Domingo Siton. Among the wounded were two teenagers and a minor. No individual or group claimed responsibility for the attacks, but Monding, an incumbent won councilor, was a known illegal miner in Bayog. It was not immediately known whether the attacks were connected to politics or had anything to do with Monding’s illegal past. (Mindanao Examiner) |
